Ferro-vanadium prices have shown signs of rising in recent days, as availability weakens and demand picks up.
Metal Bulletin’s European quotation rose to $24.50-25 per kg on Friday November 8, overcoming fears that it could drop below $23.
Market participants are now suggesting prices could break through $25 per kg in the coming days, and that for quantities
below 10 tonnes, they already have.
“Producers have been offering above $25, and I know there are some who don’t have any spot material for sale,” a distributor
said.
“When it goes up like it did a few days ago, people start getting nervous .Yesterday was quiet and people are getting ready
for [Metal Bulletin’s international ferro-alloys conference] in Barcelona,” he added.
There is concern, furthermore, over whether any continued rise in prices will be sustainable in the long-term, after ferro-vanadium prices touched $33 per kg earlier in the year, before dropping back to $24, a producer said.
“[The uptick] must be sustainable. From our position now, we can support it because there’s no material for November or
December delivery,” he said.
“We will see what people are doing at the conference,” he added.
For now at least, however, prices are still going up, a trader said.
“Maybe you can still find something below $25, but you would have to look for it,” he said.
